I started training in karate six years ago at the age of 10. The reason as to why I began training karate was due to the fact members of my family had started the sport. I initially enjoyed karate and quickly progressed through the early grades. I found that early on in my karate training that I preferred the traditional aspect and social side of karate.
Three years ago my instructor James Steadman recognised that I held a talent for Kumite and encouraged me to start competing in competitions. Immediately I entered the English National Kyu Grade Championships and was narrowly beaten in my first contest loosing on a Hantai decision. From this I developed a passion for Kumite and continued to compete. I have competed in competitions in England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Sweden, Luxemburg and France, Croatia, Cyprus, representing my club and the Midlands Regional Team. I was selected in December 2015 to represent my country at the European Championships in Cyprus.
I am incredibly lucky to have such motivation and support from all my family and friends. I feel that without them I wouldn’t have achieved all I have so far. I am inspired by my instructors James and Robert Steadman who have competed at this high level themselves and motivate me to train 6 days a week pushing me to perform at my highest level.
My aspiration for the future is to train and become a PE Teacher, being a role model and helping other children to fulfil their own potential through sport. Additionally, I will continue to compete in karate and compete on the world stage for many years to come. In the short term, I would like to achieve my 1st Dan Black Belt and continue to instruct other Karateka during lessons. Moreover, my ambitions is to win the European and World championships for my country and be a part of the 2020 Olympics.
